Merry Christmas!
“We’re all five-year-olds. We don’t know how to do this thing called life. We’re just learning how.” —Byron Katie
This is the picture that came on the Christmas card from my nephew. Abby turned five on December 1st. I feel merry just looking at this! Merry Christmas, kiddos!

Merry Christmas to you Brenda…in the story that (boy oh boy does it ever! And how!) seems to unfold, I’m deeply into wrapping presents, trying to pack to go to South Bend keeping in mind new restrictions on baggage with United, making sure money/tickets/passport triumverate is intact, ironing ironing ironing, last minute shopping for elusive presents and food, making sure the fancy frock is ready for the TWO Christmas Eve parties we attend annually, keeping the son off of video games (Call of Duty - so violent! And if you get a 25 kill streak, you get a tactical nuke!), assembling Ikea furniture for my daughter, picking up repaired shoes, making sure son has appropriate cold-weather clothing for his sleepover tonight (there’s snow here, hardly any, but the English infrastructure can’t handle it), making sure house is very tidy/hoovered for arrival of somewhat stressed husband from work, and of course, finishing up the book and keeping up to date on the blog and the blogs I follow. Whew! ‘Tis the season to be busy!

Whew is right! I feel overly stimulated just reading this. I remember days like those, only my husband was dead and my kids were in elementary school and I was teaching full-time. My son’s video game obsession lasted well into high school, till a friend of his dropped out b/c he could not release the controller. You’ll look back on these times someday and say, How in the world did I do it? The fact is, children enliven and propel us. When they move out, the energy around you subsides. Enjoy it! It IS the greatest story!

To tell the truth…enjoying it is pretty much all that is arising.
