A Song by Cat Power

The Greatest

Once I wanted to be the greatest
No wind of waterfall could stall me
And then came the rush of the flood
Stars of night turned deep to dustMelt me down
Into big black armour
Leave no trace of grace
Just in your honor
Lower me down
To culprit south
Make ‘em wash a space in town
For the lead
And the dregs of my bed
I’ve been sleepin’
Lower me down
Pin me in
Secure the grounds
For the later parade

Once I wanted to be the greatest
Two fists of solid rock
With brains that could explain
Any feeling

Lower me down
Pin me in
Secure the grounds
For the lead
And the dregs of my bed
I’ve been sleepin’
For the later parade

Once I wanted to be the greatest
No wind of waterfall could stall me
And then came the rush of the flood
Stars of night turned deep to dust

My mind was filling in the rolling balls, crashing pins, “way to gos” and “gimme fives” and “that was pathetics”. Just about to re-enter the land of lady bowling leagues, snowplows at 4 in the morning and going to Meijer for a roast chicken and a pair of sweatpants.

BTW where does the powerful cat come into it?

Maybe it’s clearer now, Suz. Cat Power is the nom de plume of American singer/songwriter Chan Marshall. I love the sound of this song, and each lady trying to be the best bowler, and each of us at one time or another wanting to be the greatest at something. Cat seems to be saying overall, don’t look for too much meaning in my words, just enjoy the sound and the movement.
